Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)

The teaching of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) at St Lawrence encompasses studies of History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship and Economics and Business. Inquiry approaches are promoted and there is an emphasis on developing a national and global identity.

The Arts

The Arts have the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich all students, exciting the imagination and encouraging them to reach their creative and expressive potential.

The Arts contribute to the development of confident and creative individuals, nurturing and challenging active and informed citizens. Learning in the Arts at St Lawrence is based on cognitive, affective and sensory/kinaesthetic responses to arts practices. Students revisit content, skills and processes with developing confidence across their years of learning.

Health and Physical Education

Health and Physical Education provides students with an understanding of health issues and the skills needed for confident participation in sport and recreational activities. This enables students to make responsible decisions about health and physical activity and promote their own and others’ health and well-being.

Physical Education and Sport is taught by a specialist teacher from Kindy to Year 6. Pre-Kindy teachers incorporate Health and Physical Education into their programme focusing on the skills essential for early years development. Annually students participate in inter-school Carnivals. Students in Years 1 – 6 participate in swimming lessons.

Italian

Children from Pre-primary to Year 6 are given the opportunity to learn Italian. A teacher is supplied by the Italian Consulate under the auspices of the Italo Australian Welfare and Cultural Centre.
